Overview
ICC Macmillan approached Fli Digital to create a new channel to expand their digital distribution to using an "eBooks" concept. Additionally as a major international content aggregator, they had access to a large library of mobile content such as ringtones, wallpapers, and more. With hundreds of top publishers as existing clients for their other conversion and distribution methods, ICC MacMillan was looking to stay ahead of the curve in technology and innovation by offering their content on mobile devices.
Components
The current solution consists of several key components in fulfillment of Global Reader mobile strategy:
- "Book Builder" – One of the most critical components to the success of the strategy was to give their existing content team the ability to load content properly into the Fresh Platform. The Fresh team extended the platform with a custom process for MacMillan which allows them to import content in the EPUB standard format (an XML format for reflowable digital content). This in part allows the Fresh Platform to effectively create a great mobile experience for End-users while letting the MacMillan team add content as traditional and formatted as The Raven by Poe and as current as Dirty Girls on Top by Alisa Valdes-Rodriguez. Additionally, after the book has been added, the team has the opportunity to use the Web management tool to further 'clean-up' the book if the end result in a chapter/page environment editor.
- WAP Book Reader - As important as importing the books properly is the End-user experience in navigating and managing books. This was approached from scratch, identifying what is going to be most important to mobile visitors. We took into consideration how large the library of content is, as well as how lengthy some of the available titles are and created the concept of a Library, as well as per-book Bookmarks. By uniquely identifying users, we provide a near seamless experience for users to manage reading one or many books.
